Kayan of Borneo

BORNEO ISLAND

WHY BORNEO?
Well, I am from Sarawak, located on the east of Malaysia also apart of the island of Borneo. i am from an indegenous tribe which belongs to the orang ulu community also known as the Kayan people of Borneo.

RACE: KAYAN
POPULATION: 27,000 IN BORNEO
LOCATION:BARAM,BELAGA AND KALIMANTAN
TRAITS of RACE:TATTOOING,STRETCHED EAR LOBES AND STRATIFICATION IN SOCIETY

The Kayan's of Borneo use to be head hunter's which have extensive tattoo's, for the ladies tattooing in the tribe represents social class and ranking in the stratification of the ruling and middle class. The stretching of ear lobes are also a sign of beauty and class in the Kayan community.

The Kayan people of Borneo are known for their wooden carvings 'KALONG' OR 'KELAWIT'with their native tribal designs all symbolizing an important element that plays a role in thier daily life.

Kayan people plant hill paddy which differs them from other indegenous races in Borneo who plan wet paddy, the Kayan tribe still live in longhouses called 'uma aru' in the northern part of Sarawak. With modernization and oppurtunities many Kayan's have migrated to diferrent parts of the world for educational and working purposes.

As a rich culture based community the Kayan peole practice stratification in their community which consist of the ruling class and the middle class, each Kayan Longhouse will have this ranking amongst the people.(Rousseau,2010)
